Using census data, this map was created to compare the cost of rent between Vancouver and Montreal, illustrating one aspect of the cities' affordability. This map represents the difference in the monthly cost of rent between Vancouver and Montreal. Data taken from the 2016 census, documented on U of Ts CHASS website. Null data, or census tracts with fewer than 40 respondents are represented as empty areas within a city (although they are not empty, there are simply not enough respondents to release data without violating the respondent's privacy). As only forty respondents are required to release data, data released may reflect the average rent cost of said area inaccurately, should there be a low comparative respondent rate in that area. Some census tracts also cover a large area. This becomes problematic, as when one uses dissemination areas too look at the same data, the overall look of the area is completely different. However, dissemination areas contain too large of holes in their data. This is due to a smaller area, as there is a much larger percentage of area that cannot be mapped due to failure to meet the forty respondent minimum.
